home environmental quality
PrepareFirst assists clients regarding a variety of home environmental quality issues which, though unseen in many cases, can cause serious health problems.
Here are some of the environmental issues we cover:
Radon - Radon is a naturally occurring gas that enters the home through cracks in the foundation floor and walls, drains, and other openings. An estimated one out of every 15 homes in the United States has radon levels above 4pci/L, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency’s recommended action level. Indoor radon exposure is estimated to be the second leading cause of lung cancer.
Mold - Molds and mildews are biological pollutants that release disease-causing toxins. Children, elderly people, and people with breathing problems, allergies, and lung diseases are particularly susceptible to disease-causing biological agents in indoor air.
Water Quality - The EPA has issued drinking water standards, or Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs), for more than 80 contaminants. The nation’s approximately 55,000 Community Water Systems (CWSs) must test periodically MCLs. In 1996, 4,151 systems, or 7 percent, reported one or more MCL violations. In addition to the problem of underperforming water systems, many adverse contaminants can enter a family’s drinking water between a treatment plant and the household tap.
