Perception is Reality

My wife went out on a weeknight to visit with some friends, leaving me at home with responsibility for the full bedtime “routine” with our kids.  My wife was ADAMANT about my daughter (then 5) being IN BED, LIGHTS OUT at 8:30.  The evening went very smoothly.  Homework and baths were done.  Everyone was happy.  I was sitting on my daughter’s bed with her reading a bedtime story when, all at once, she and I heard the garage door going up signalling her mother’s return home.  I looked at my watch and panicked.  It was 8:45.  I looked at my daughter with big “uh oh” eyes, and she looked back at me the same way.  I said: “I think we’re in trouble!”  She said: “Actually, I think YOU’RE in trouble.”
